Hair Styles for Curly Hair
If you have been blessed with curly hair, then take it from someone that has very straight fine hair that you are very lucky to have what you have. I know, I know.... we always want what we don't have. I remember growing up with my best friend who had the most beautiful natural curly hair you could ever imagine. She used to take an hour everyday just to get rid of her beautiful curls. I couldn't understand why, when I would pay money to get a perm so I could have curly hair. Whether you have sort curls or long, you can never run out of ways to style your hair when you have natural curls.
Curly Hair Tips
Women that have curly hair know that there can be a price to have long locks. You can experience problems such as split ends, or frizzy dry hair. You may deal with these problems because of genetics or it may be a diet issue, Whatever the cause is, there is always something you can do to make your curls manageable.
- Moisturize daily- The reason for frizzy hair is usually due to using the wrong conditioner or not using it often enough. Check the ingredients of your shampoo and conditioner to make sure you are using one that is appropriate for your hair type, and leave it in for at least 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing it out.
- Avoid using Heat- Try not to blow dry, use curling irons, or straighten your hair on a daily basis.. Letting your hair air dry is always best, especially when it comes to natural curls.
- If you have fine natural curls, blowing your hair with a diffuser will give you a better curl. See video above.
- Combing hair- Always use wide toothed comb. If your hair has tangles then use your fingers until your hair has dried. This way you will have less breakage.
- Highlights- Try adding highlights around your face to bring out your special feature.
- Styling products- Using products made for your natural curls will add shine and definition.
- A Good Diet- Eating well by eating enough proteins will add natural sheen to your hair.

Long Curly Hair Tips
- Curly hair is very forgiving. Throughout the years you may have abused your hair by sitting in the sun for too long or not using the right styling products or conditioners, but as soon as you decide to meet your curls half way, they will respond once again giving you head-turning results that are breath-taking.
- One thing you can't do, is give yourself a haircut, or at least you shouldn't. But you can choose who will. Make sure you get a cut that flatters your face by finding a stylist that specializes in your desired cut. Don't be afraid to ask questions, if it bothers them, then go somewhere else. Try to find one that has worked with naturally curly hair and you will always be happy with your results.
- For a loose sexy look, try using a medium strong gel and scrunching your hair into place.

Eliza,
Usually the reason for frizzy hair is it is either to dry from lack of moisture or using the wrong products,
Try going to Sally's Beauty Salon and asking them for a shampoo and conditioner that has low alcohol. Most products sold in stores have alot of alcohol and can make your curls look very frizzy. You also want to think about any other products you use as well, such as hair sprays or gels.
You can also try using a good moisturizing leave-in conditioner that can be used daily instead of your typical rinse out kind.
Since your hair is probably dry I would suggest using a moisturizing hair mask. Make sure you leave it in your hair at least 5 to 10 minutes. You can use these once a week.
Now for some personal advice: My husband has very curly hair. He loves to wear it long and he also, like you, battles with the frizzes. He uses a product that is 100% alcohol free that is called Frizz Busters serum by Fantasia. We get it at Wal-greens. I'm sure if you don't have a wal-greens near by that you can find it in another store like wal-mart or save-on. It's a great product that has NO ALCOHOL at all. He loves it and uses it every day. Like I said before make sure your other products have no or low alcohol also.
Letting your hair air dry is best also instead of using heat with a blow drier. If you have to then use a defusier, but its really best not to use it at all.
Trimming your hair regularly also can help, even if its only tipping the ends off.
I really hope these tips help, let me know how Frizz buster works for you.
Good tips, some will also work for extremely curly hair.
I have naturally curly hair that tends to expand into a pyramid or bell shape that i hate. I have tried numerous products and cuts to keep my hair from expanding but none seemed to have work. Also, when i put products in my hair, the end to work for a couple of hours but then my hair turns frizzy and unmanagable. Do you know of any hair products that work all day long?
P.S. My hair has enough volume so I tend to stay away from volumizing products.
Excellent tips...Having naturally curly hair myself and read up on curls and hair styles, I've come across some of these before. The really interesting one though was on healthy eating. I've never really thought about the effect of what I eat has on my hair, but it makes perfect sense that it would.
Loraine....I have to comment because your curl issues practically mirror mine. From the pyramid shape to the frizz. Everyone's curls are different, but this is what I try to do in "controlling" my curls:
1. I only run a comb through it while I'm still in the shower and after I've shampooed and conditioned.
2. While it’s wet, I scrunch the anti-frizz cream or leave-in conditioner in my hair instead of combing it through. I'm always changing products, but I always seem to come back to Garnier.
3. Layers have always worked for me. I've had stylists that look at me and ask "are you sure?" when told that's what I want, but I stand by it. And I’m content with the fact that since I live in a very humid part of the states, I’m always going to have some frizz. Hope this is some help.
Thank you very much RachelC, but I recently talked to a new stylist and she gave me some advice about my hair. I, too, have layers in my hair but only a few in the back near my neck because my hair is a little longer than shoulder length when dry. My stylist recommended this daily routine that can be done at any time of the day.
1. If your hair is very dry like most curly haired girls, you probably don't shower everyday because your hair doesn't produce natural oils as fast as other hair types. If I take a shower, I put my conditioner through my hair and I brush through it so all of my hair gets conditioned. After I leave it in for 2-5 minutes I rinse it out. This makes the hair easier to put products in, but if you don't shower that day I advise you to fill your bathroom sink up and dunk you head and just brush it while it's wet.
2. Here comes the longer portion, my hair products. After I get out of the shower (or get my head out of the sink) I put a leave in conditioner in my hair. After that, I use a cream gel and a scrunching gel though I advise you NOT to scrunch your hair as it breaks the natural curl pattern. Then, I must confess, I actually us got2B glued spiking gel with my curls. I know it sounds insane but it is one of the only heavy duty gels that doesn't make my hair too crunchy. I only put a quarter amount size in while my hair is still wet, then I brush it through my hair.
That's pretty much it to my routine of hair care. I don't try to mess with it as that tends to produce more frizz. I really hope this helps RachelC.
I love love love curly hair, it just looks so nice and can look wild and sexy at the same time, the best products I have found that helps keep the frizz down and define curls are natural hair products for curly hair because they do not dry out the hair. In the process of finding a decent cut after growing out a shortcut for a very long time, but one idea on nongreasy product for playing up curls...Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner. Saved me when I had beach-bleached long hair back in my pre-college days--still works!
it works! so good it is better then me doing it
lol
I often find that leaving in a conditioner after I get out of the shower and letting it sit in a towel is helpful for health. But after it's detangled I then run a serum like john friedas or there's one at walmart called coconut oil that's made by organix. P.S. I have the tightest curls of European curls with the thickness of a Native and African American's hair... much like Beyonce's actually. Good luck!
this is so awesome
My hair has enough volume so I tend to stay away from volumizing products. but I use a special shampoo to make it more curly.
The best products I have found that helps keep the frizz down and define curls are natural hair products for curly hair
this is helpful but whenever i try to do these things, it never worked for my hair! i have weird frizzy curls and im not sure how to style or cut it, help!
its good it works so nicely. i love it
I have thick curly/wavy hair that tends to get dry and I also live in a humid climate. Over the years I've run into some really great products that are natural and without sulfates or parabens. Also my biggest hair breakthrough was ditching the shampoo and using hair cleansers instead. Cleansers still clean your hair, but without stripping it of its natural oils.
When I cleanse my hair I follow up with a rich conditioner. I use my fingers to comb the conditioner through my hair concentrating on the ends. I leave the conditioner on for 3-5 mins. When I dry my hair I gently squeeze out the excess water and use a towel to gently scrunch it. I never wrap my hair in a towel because it disrupts the curl pattern and creates frizz. Next I use a quarter sized amount of Moroccan Oil mixed with two dollops of curl cream and I scrunch it through my hair. I allow my hair to dry a little . When my hair is still slightly damp I use a little bit of the fructis curling mouse and scrunch it through to add hold and definition.
To keep my curls fresh between shampoos, I use a curl refresher by curls Unleashed. You simply dampen your hair with a spray bottle and smooth a small amount of the product through your hair and then scrunch it.
For anyone with curly try to find a good stylist that specializes in cutting curly hair. I found an awesome stylist through Naturallycurly.com under the Salon Finder option. another tip Never get razor cuts they can cause frizz and stringy looking ends. I apologize for the length of this entry, but I hope you find it helpful.

hey,
I've really frizzy, unmanageable, curly hair.
the problem is... I can't really get settled with the way my crown looks. it makes me look terrible and doesn't frame my face at all.
what do I do???
I've been blow drying my hair into place all these years.
I do understand the whole business of maintaining the hair, but what I really need, is some help on very oily curly hair. Most curly hair isn't very oily, I'm confused. Also, i never really use hair products other than the ocasional leave in conditioner to moisturize. What do I do?
My hair is extremely curly. Its past my shoulders when straight. As soon i go curly it shrinks up to my shoulders and does not style cute at all around my face. It just shrinks up and looks like a helmet. I will never wear it curly because my curls wont style right and lay long. I have so much hair, and tried all kinds of gels, mousse, serums, everything i cant get it to lay right and be cute! what do i do?
My hair is super curly and thick. No matter how much I moisturize it's still dry :(
